Structural Panel House, Essex CT
Designed using structural insulated panels (SIPs) for walls and roof, this contemporary home takes full advantage of a south-facing orientation for passive heating. Deep roof overhangs and sun shades at the first floor windows prevent overheating, while a centrally located woodstove provides a sustainable heat source. The double-height living area allows light to reach all the way to the north-facing kitchen. (Project is unbuilt)
Project involvement: Barbara Mehren Freeman: Architect of Record, Principal in Charge responsible for design. Pamela Hanson: design development team, Project Architect responsible for construction documents while with Mehren Freeman Architects.
